A detailed description of the SPEI drought index is presented on page 9 . The SPEI index is relative to average or normal conditions for the site, and the SPEI scale: 0.99 to -0.99 Normal, -1.00 to -1.49 Moderately dry, -1.50 to -1.99 Severely dry, <-2.00 Extremely dry. 5 Based on data from the World Bank Group’s Climate Knowledge Portal. 6 Climate statistics based on the Cortez mine site. 7 Climate statistics based on the South Laverton property. Interannual variability can be a significant water risk. This risk is highlighted in the table where the wettest month in the precipitation record is divided by the average annual precipitation. Three jurisdictions stand out as having unusually high ratios: Coquimbo, Chile; Zacatecas, Mexico; and Mato Grosso, Brazil, indicating the potential to have precipitation that could potentially cause flooding.
